First Time Skaters

Welcome to CanSkate!! We have put together a list of tips, tricks and rules to help your skater get the most out of their first experience with our program. If you have any additional questions, please do not hesitate to reach out.

  • Skaters must wear a CSA approved helmet.
  • Well-fitted skates are a very important. For helpful tips on selecting skates see our Proper Equipment tab for more info.
  • We recommend the children wear warm, comfortable layers. Splash pants are great for keeping knees and legs dry.
  • Mitts or gloves are a must! (I recommend keeping a spare pair on hand in case a mid-session change is needed)
  • We ask that parents do not watch from the players benches as this can cause a distraction to the skaters.
  • We encourage skaters to stay on the ice and keep trying new skills. We will be sure to call parents or guardians to the ice level if needed.
  • There will be older skaters helping the Professional Coaches out with all programs. We call them Program Assistants. Please remember that these skaters are volunteers and can be as young as 10 years of age. If you have any concern with them or your skater, please direct your concerns to the Professional Coach after the session.
  • Please always be in the rink area or lobby in case your child needs you for any reason. If you have an emergency, please have another parent be in charge of your skater and give them your contact info in case anything happens.
